The RIVER PARK
vineyard is conveniently located on the banks of the Lachlan River
on the outskirts of Cowra.
Bill and Chris Murphy own
and operate the property, which is planted with Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The Chardonnay grape vines were
planted in 1994 and the first harvest commenced approximately two years later. The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were planted
in 1996 with their first vintage in 1999.
Bulk wine is sold to Orlando
and Rosemount with some kept and made by Bill and Chris into River Park Cowra Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Due to strong
demand the couple intend to increase local bottle sales in the near future.
The Cowra Chardonnay 200
wine is a fresh, fruit-driven style wine, showing fine light Chardonnay fruit and spicy overtones from fermentation and short
term maturation in French oak barrels.
The wine can be enjoyed all
year round, yet will cellar well for many years, and was first entered in the 2001 Cowra Wine Show.
The Cabernet Sauvignon was
fermented and matured in a mixture of new and older style American oak barriques. It is a deep crimson in colour and shows
good berry and cassie aromas, with firm, rich palate overlaid with sweet oak.
This wine will cellar extremely
well and is a good accompaniment for all red meat dishes.
River
Park wines enjoy excellent support from Cowra, Young, Bathurst
and Orange wine outlets, including many hotels, motels, clubs. This growing demand has now extended
to many local restaurants.
Cowra Art teacher Anne Stanley
designed the River Park label, magnificently
depicting the Lachlan River.
Throughout the process, Bill
and Chris’ aim has been to make River Park
wine a truly excellent product with local fruit and local people involved.
